Okay, I wasn't aware of that syntax. But of course it is stated in the documentation. The string we have in $vn(variable2) is data which is reduced by protobuf, so the %s is probably really in there.

I have now changed the command to how you suggested it, so far I don't see a difference in ngrep output.
