This alias handling in tm was added to make the presence and dialog module work without major changes in exiting configs or source code. It could be an option to add a modparam to be able to disable internal handling if one wants to do it via event route.

The function in nathelper probably was added with add_contact_alias(), while this alias handling in tm is required for set_contact_alias(). But it can be migrated to use the function from core, if compatible.
