### Description
The TLS module seems to have some regression from 5.7.3 to 5.7.4 causing `tls.reload` to fail loading certificates.
### Troubleshooting
#### System Info
- kamailio version: 5.7.4 (from official kamailio repos) - distro version: debian 12 - OS/kernel version: Linux ip-172-31-30-183 6.1.0-17-cloud-amd64 #1 SMP PREEMPT_DYNAMIC Debian 6.1.69-1 (2023-12-30) x86_64 GNU/Linux - openssl version: 3.0.11 (from official debian repos)
#### Reproduction
On a fresh install of debian 12: - install openssl from debian repos - install kamailio 5.7.4 from kamailio repos - install kamailio-tls-modules from kamailio repos - create a self signed cert with 4096 bit rsa key - create a basic tls.cfg to load those files on the client/server default domain - reload kamailio - try running `kamcmd tls.reload`
#### Debugging Data
Example tls.cfg
``` [server:default] method = TLSv1.2+ verify_certificate = yes require_certificate = yes private_key = /etc/dsiprouter/certs/dsiprouter-key.pem certificate = /etc/dsiprouter/certs/dsiprouter-cert.pem ca_list = /etc/dsiprouter/certs/ca-list.pem ca_path = /etc/dsiprouter/certs/ca
[client:default] method = TLSv1.2+ verify_certificate = yes require_certificate = yes private_key = /etc/dsiprouter/certs/dsiprouter-key.pem certificate = /etc/dsiprouter/certs/dsiprouter-cert.pem ca_list = /etc/dsiprouter/certs/ca-list.pem ca_path = /etc/dsiprouter/certs/ca ```
Example tls cert:
``` Certificate: Data: Version: 3 (0x2) Serial Number: 7a:43:b8:fa:df:c9:ed:a7:d6:ab:bb:9a:89:c0:8e:95:fd:62:de:26 Signature Algorithm: sha256WithRSAEncryption Issuer: C = US, ST = MI, L = Detroit, O = dSIPRouter, CN = ec2-34-224-90-100.compute-1.amazonaws.com Validity Not Before: Jan 30 15:28:11 2024 GMT Not After : Jan 29 15:28:11 2025 GMT Subject: C = US, ST = MI, L = Detroit, O = dSIPRouter, CN = ec2-34-224-90-100.compute-1.amazonaws.com Subject Public Key Info: Public Key Algorithm: rsaEncryption Public-Key: (4096 bit) ... ```
Example tls key:
``` Private-Key: (4096 bit, 2 primes) modulus: ... ```
Can you generate a test key pair / cert that exhibits the same behaviour and paste them here.
@space88man I shared a link below with an example key/cert pair from an ephemeral VM. I can provide access to that VM for testing if needed as well.
Hmmm ... not reproducible here
kamailio version 5.7.4 (x86_64/linux) kamcmd tls.reload leads to
``` 7(126739) INFO: tls [tls_domain.c:371]: ksr_tls_fill_missing(): TLSc<default>: ca_path='(null)' 7(126739) INFO: tls [tls_domain.c:378]: ksr_tls_fill_missing(): TLSc<default>: crl='(null)' 7(126739) INFO: tls [tls_domain.c:382]: ksr_tls_fill_missing(): TLSc<default>: require_certificate=1 7(126739) INFO: tls [tls_domain.c:390]: ksr_tls_fill_missing(): TLSc<default>: cipher_list='(null)' 7(126739) INFO: tls [tls_domain.c:397]: ksr_tls_fill_missing(): TLSc<default>: private_key='/etc/kamailio/certs/myself-key.pem' 7(126739) INFO: tls [tls_domain.c:401]: ksr_tls_fill_missing(): TLSc<default>: verify_certificate=1 7(126739) INFO: tls [tls_domain.c:406]: ksr_tls_fill_missing(): TLSc<default>: verify_depth=9 7(126739) INFO: tls [tls_domain.c:410]: ksr_tls_fill_missing(): TLSc<default>: verify_client=0 7(126739) INFO: tls [tls_domain.c:750]: set_verification(): TLSc<default>: Server MUST present valid certificate ...
Sounds like the code path that is causing the error is not being run. Is that on Debian 12? Try with the following tls.cfg:
``` [server:default] method = TLSv1.2+ verify_certificate = yes require_certificate = yes private_key = /etc/ssl/private/dsiprouter-key.pem certificate = /etc/ssl/private/dsiprouter-cert.pem ca_list = /etc/ssl/certs/ca-certificates.crt ca_path = /etc/ssl/certs
[client:default] method = TLSv1.2+ verify_certificate = yes require_certificate = yes private_key = /etc/ssl/private/dsiprouter-key.pem certificate = /etc/ssl/private/dsiprouter-cert.pem ca_list = /etc/ssl/certs/ca-certificates.crt ca_path = /etc/ssl/certs ```
I added `ca_path=/etc/ssl/certs`, in addition to `ca_list=....` to both client/server stanzas—and cannot reproduce. I am using vanilla
``` ||/ Name Version Architecture Description +++-====================-============-============-================================= ii ca-certificates 20230311 all Common CA certificates ``` The `dsiprouter*` key/cert files are in a separate folder. I have 140 x pem, 1 x ca-certificates.crt, 140 x hash links in `/etc/ssl/certs/`.
Do you have any additions to /etc/ssl/certs ?
Leaving a reference to an unrelated issue that has the same error message but with a totally different platfom and triggering mechanism. https://github.com/openssl/openssl/issues/18113
Same vanilla version of `ca-certificates`:
``` root@ip-172-31-22-12:~# dpkg -l |grep ca-cert ii ca-certificates 20230311 all Common CA certificates ```
and just to verify the same number of certs:
``` root@ip-172-31-22-12:~# ls -l /etc/ssl/certs/|wc -l 282 root@ip-172-31-22-12:~# ls -l /etc/ssl/certs/*.crt|wc -l 1 root@ip-172-31-22-12:~# ls -l /etc/ssl/certs/*.pem|wc -l 140 root@ip-172-31-22-12:~# find /etc/ssl/certs/ -mindepth 1 -not -name '*.crt' -and -not -name '*.pem' |wc -l 140 ```
private_key and certificate are files instead of links in my case. the cert is a static self-signed cert, is has not been changed since initial install.
the error is consistent on `tls.reload`:
``` Feb 2 13:50:59 ip-172-31-22-12 /usr/sbin/kamailio[34076]: INFO: tls [tls_domain.c:345]: ksr_tls_fill_missing(): TLSs<default>: tls_method=25 Feb 2 13:50:59 ip-172-31-22-12 /usr/sbin/kamailio[34076]: INFO: tls [tls_domain.c:357]: ksr_tls_fill_missing(): TLSs<default>: certificate='/etc/dsiprouter/certs/dsiprouter-cert.pem' Feb 2 13:50:59 ip-172-31-22-12 /usr/sbin/kamailio[34076]: INFO: tls [tls_domain.c:364]: ksr_tls_fill_missing(): TLSs<default>: ca_list='/etc/dsiprouter/certs/ca-list.pem' Feb 2 13:50:59 ip-172-31-22-12 /usr/sbin/kamailio[34076]: INFO: tls [tls_domain.c:371]: ksr_tls_fill_missing(): TLSs<default>: ca_path='/etc/dsiprouter/certs/ca' Feb 2 13:50:59 ip-172-31-22-12 /usr/sbin/kamailio[34076]: INFO: tls [tls_domain.c:378]: ksr_tls_fill_missing(): TLSs<default>: crl='(null)' Feb 2 13:50:59 ip-172-31-22-12 /usr/sbin/kamailio[34076]: INFO: tls [tls_domain.c:382]: ksr_tls_fill_missing(): TLSs<default>: require_certificate=1 Feb 2 13:50:59 ip-172-31-22-12 /usr/sbin/kamailio[34076]: INFO: tls [tls_domain.c:390]: ksr_tls_fill_missing(): TLSs<default>: cipher_list='(null)' Feb 2 13:50:59 ip-172-31-22-12 /usr/sbin/kamailio[34076]: INFO: tls [tls_domain.c:397]: ksr_tls_fill_missing(): TLSs<default>: private_key='/etc/dsiprouter/certs/dsiprouter-key.pem' Feb 2 13:50:59 ip-172-31-22-12 /usr/sbin/kamailio[34076]: INFO: tls [tls_domain.c:401]: ksr_tls_fill_missing(): TLSs<default>: verify_certificate=1 Feb 2 13:50:59 ip-172-31-22-12 /usr/sbin/kamailio[34076]: INFO: tls [tls_domain.c:406]: ksr_tls_fill_missing(): TLSs<default>: verify_depth=9 Feb 2 13:50:59 ip-172-31-22-12 /usr/sbin/kamailio[34076]: INFO: tls [tls_domain.c:410]: ksr_tls_fill_missing(): TLSs<default>: verify_client=0 Feb 2 13:50:59 ip-172-31-22-12 /usr/sbin/kamailio[34076]: NOTICE: tls [tls_domain.c:1168]: ksr_tls_fix_domain(): registered server_name callback handler for socket [:0], server_name='<default>' ... the `tls.reload` error occurs whether kamailio is run as non-root system user and as root user. it is definitely is not permissions.
what version of openssl are you on?
``` root@ip-172-31-22-12:~# openssl version OpenSSL 3.0.11 19 Sep 2023 (Library: OpenSSL 3.0.11 19 Sep 2023) ```
Not sure if this helps but the cert/key was generated with:
``` penssl req -new -newkey rsa:4096 -x509 -sha256 -days 365 -nodes -out /etc/dsiprouter/certs/dsiprouter-cert.pem -keyout /etc/dsiprouter/certs/dsiprouter-key.pem -subj "/C=US/ST=MI/L=Detroit/O=dSIPRouter/CN=ec2-3-94-130-255.compute-1.amazonaws.com" ```
The openssl.cnf is vanilla default from the openssl package, doesn't look like any extra providers or fips is enabled. /etc/ssl/openssl.cnf:
added default provider and that seemed to fix the issue. pertinent sections from /etc/ssl/openssl.cnf:
``` [openssl_init] providers = provider_sect

thanks for pointing out that related issue @space88man I think this version of openssl.cnf is packaged by debian since the openssl repo has the default provider enabled by default: https://github.com/openssl/openssl/blob/openssl-3.0/apps/openssl.cnf#L53
