Friends,
A few days ago I got complains in the IRC channel that kamailio was a dead project because there was never anyone in the channel to support it. It might be helpful for the project if more of us try to connect to the #kamailio and #sip-router channels more frequently.
It's quite empty.

Speaking of ways to improve IRC, the following ideas come to my mind:
- Shut down #Kamailio and let it point at #sip-router instead. I see no real benefit in maintaining two distinct channels. - Extend the channel topic to show the (shortened?) URL to the mailing lists. It's the primary approach to support Kamailio and will keep to be.
Just my 2 cents.
Cheers,

ahh, irc ... but we use twitter, facebook, g+ these days :-). Actually I like irc and used to be there, but lately it was quite impossible time-wise to be online for long time and join the channels. Maybe other people can stay there and if they cannot answer, then they will suggest or even bring themselves the topic on mailing lists. The mailing lists stays the main and most convenient support channel for community from my point of view at this moment.

Does IRC support this kind of channel name aliasing, e.g., #kamailio and #sip-router to end up in the same channel? I think I looked for such option, but didn't find it.

This can be done and hopefully will help.

I was just assuming that it worked somehow because I often find myself being forwarded. By virtue of Google, I found this blog post which claims that it is in fact feasible:
http://www.geekshed.net/2010/03/can-i-link-two-channels/
Money quote:
"Linking two channels together is very easy, as it only involves setting two channel modes – the first sets a limit of X people that can be in the channel, and the second sets the channel to send people to after X people have joined the main channel.
[...]
So if I wanted to forward my channel #Inara to #Adria, I would do the following: /mode #Inara +lL 1 #Adria. If I wanted to always have the channel set like that, so that nobody could change it, I would use chanserv’s mlock option, and do: /msg chanserv set #Inara mlock +lL 1 #Adria."

I tried but the first command seems without effect and for the second I am replied that I am not allowed to do it. Tried few more options found on google, but no luck either. Anyhow, not an irc guy here, anyone willing to become op and try merging the channels?
Cheers, Daniel

If no one is online in IRC, remove IRC from support alternatives.
Not to be pushy, but "other" projects has very active support on IRC so it might make sense to at least be there now and then. I don't disagree with removing it from the web page or add a disclaimer "If you don't find anyone in the IRC channel that answers your question, make sure to send e-mail to the -users mailing list with your question, and you'll get an answer quickly, when the people that has the answers are able to respond to your query".
Or something similar.

Hi all,
I was yesterday on the official GNU IRC channel . Even if there were quite a bunch of people there, there was no talk on the channel itself. I've asked a question and got nothing... half our later somebody asked another question .... still nothing (ok maybe they were on the USA TZ or something but still... it's GNU).
IMHO interest for IRC has gone to a new low lately (like the last decade). Maybe we can put a chanbot that will redirect users to the mailing list or website (or periodically list info about the project, FAQs etc.)

There is huge activity in all Asterisk-related channels and some other projects as well. I guess it depends on the project and the user base.
Agree that it seems old-fashioned. Jabber chat rooms feels more modern. In this group, we should have a kamailio conf room to stress Daniel's code.

To be very pushy this time: Who has management access to the #sip-router and #kamailio channels ? We really need to change the topic, like yesterday.

Hi Olle,
the last change in #kamailio was done from Daniel according to the server status. For sip-router maybe he's as well access.
Best regards,
Henning

OK, so at least I am OP for all these channels (#sip-router, #kamailio and #openser), not sure if I am owner. I changed the topics, then I tried to merge with the hints provided previously, but failed to get good results here.
If any of the good friends of our projects wants OP capabilities and spend time to forward the other channels to #sip-router, improve interaction with bots, a.s.o. to make irc activity more useful, drop me an email with the irc id. Also will be appreciated if you can send the irc commands that grant you the privileges you need.
Cheers, Daniel
