Finally, it turned out to be a php problem. For some reason it was built
without the mail() function. Recompiling php fixed the problem.

sendmail_path = /usr/sbin/sendmail -t -i
and the unix box sends mail ok with pine
it has slackware 9, apache_1.3.31 and php-4.3.8
Any ideas of what could be wrong ?
Or how to get more debugging data ?
