Although I am trying to create a small scalable setup for 500-1000 users
growing to (5000 max.)
What are the basic hardware requirements for something small like this?
I was thinking dual or quad core with mysql on different box maybe
(albeit I think something this small is ok on the same server maybe)?
What is your setup or what do you recommend? I used the voip calculator
on agile website do not know how close it is. I found that when I was
search for voip billing software but they never answer the phones or
voicemails so I ran across trabas open source seems nice and basic.

again yes. Asterisk can be used as application server and PSTN gateway.
By using Asterisk of course you have to deal with the hardware
yourself and be prepared that you have to update Asterisk regularly.
Nevertheless Asterisk is really flexible and you can even add some
features if needed - this can't be done with commercial products.
If you only need a dumb PSTN gateway I can also recommend Cisco
As53x0. You turn it on, configure it and your are done - never had any
issues with them - works like a charm and very reliable.
