what comes to soap, i would prefer a solution that has an abstraction
layer and backends for both soap and xmlrpc, since not everyone of fond
of microsoft solutions.

I think that using soap is a good idea and it DOES NOT necessarily mean that
you have to be fond of microsoft.
Successfuly deployed many nice things using SER & open source soap, I don't
think it is slow or complicated.
