mysql: I always used the mysql rpms from redhat. they are working fine. You need at least
the server-rpm, and the client-rpm. (I think you would also need the mysql-devel rpms if
you want to build ser from sources.)
I don't know if mysqladmin is intalled from the mysql server rpm, but you may try
'find -name mysqladmin'
from the / directoy to find it.

mysql.com last night and it installed without any comments,

couldn't find the admin script 'mysqladmin' anywhere.

that. Odd ...

Unreachable (port =

ICMP unreachable means, that ser is not running. this may be error in the config file or due to some other
reason. watch
the logging during
startup on another console, as root type:
tail -f /var/log/messages
I use the alias command just before the module loading and
it works fine for
me, also with several domains, e.g:
fifo="/tmp/ser_fifo"
alias=obelix.ict.tuwien.ac.at
alias=xyz.ict.tuwien.ac.at

sometimes ser does not start (reported several times on the mostly at redhat systems). you can easy verify if
ser is running by:
ps -A
Then you should see a lot of ser processes running.

I am not running mysql. I'll try that next.
