The did parameter is used by the dialog module to easily identify sequential requests belonging to a dialog (did=dialog ID). This param is inserted in the RR header of the initial requests only and it is inherited by the sequential requests via the Route header.

I suppose it is inserted in case of a "routing spiral", because it is inserted when the INVITE request is routed through the proxy a second time.
