Zen, I also installed MySQL-server-4.1.10a-0 on my RH ES. I did not have any problems. So most likely the original problem character set. I suggest dropping ser database and re-running the shell script. 4.1.10a seems to be working fine for me and I had initial user 'admin' entered in subscriber database.
