what would prevent anyone to just reverse-engineer the
MS protocol and
XML-language?
Can't be too hard, can it?
Messenger can be seen as a black box with SIP/SDP coming in and out. And
if you can sniff incoming and outgoing of a black box, you can always
reverse-engineer it, can't you?

I am afraid that this will work properly only if the other
side uses MSN messenger as well.
