Hello Nelson
It might be a problem with Debian, it's default shell is changed from
bash to something else (It happened on some systems). Can you please
have a look and tell us that indeed you are using bash as a shell (check
/etc/password and then `file /bin/sh`).
AFAIK, the new Ubuntu/Debian shell is dash.
