SERusers,
I am working on a pilot for SIP and am planning to purchase a server and
install SER on it. I need to purchase several SIP hardphones to test
and wanted to see if anyone had any recommendations. Are most of the
"SIP compatible" phones out there still proprietary to a particular
server? The phone in particular I was looking at is the Polycom
Soundpoint IP 600, which won the "Editor's Choice" in a review by
Network Computing
http://www.nwc.com/shared/printArticle.jhtml?article=/1416/1416f2full.ht
ml&pub=nwc . If this will not work, does anyone have ANY hardphone
recommendations? Polycom says their product has only been tested with
Broadcom's SIP server.
I apologize for being such a newb...I am still trying to read up on SIP
and understand the big picture. I appreciate any help or feedback.
Thanks,
Scott
Is there any way to see if a SIP message is from behind nat? The example for
nathelper searches for Cisco ATA, but you could have that without nat and
you could have a different phone behind nat.
Can I always apply nat fixing? Does it break anything if it was not natted?
(My SER is not behind nat. It might make a difference if SER itself is
behind nat.)
Is there still (0.8.11) the function add_rport()? SER does not complain with
it there. Is it the same as force_rport? Does it do anything? Is it
necessary? What does it do? (I see force_rport in nathelper.cfg.)
Why would I want to add direction=active?
Am I correct that there are 2 points in a SIP message that there could be
problems from nat, 1-various SIP headers, and 2-SDP (c=, o=)?
Does fix_nated_contact fix everything in the SIP message itself and
fix_nated_sdp fix everything in SDP?
Where would I want fix_nated_contact and fix_nated_sdp? Do I want
fix_nated_contact in every message and fix_nated_sdp in INVITEs and its
responses (provisional and OK)?
Thanks.
Dovid
I found an example config for nathelper in the modules/nethelper
directory in the source tar. It seems to be working great, with one
small exception. If I disconnect one of the ATA's and then reconnect
it, it connects via a different port and now I have keep-alive messages
going to both the old and the new port. In the serctl ul show, I see
the old address still listed there. How do I set these to expire?
Thanks,
Stephen

Subject: [Serusers] NAT with ATA 186
I am trying to enable an ATA 186 to work behind NAT. Is there anyway to
do this without forwarding port 5060 to the ATA? Is nathelper related
to this and if so, where can I find any information on how to use it? I
have the via header option enabled on the ata. Is there something I
need to do on SER?
Thanks,
Stephen

Yes. In Redhat 9 the rpm sometimes hangs. Reboot the machine (then rpm
works fine again) and verify the installation of the packages as root
with the command:
rpm -qa | grep ser

Hi,
1. Yes rpm does not give me any error messages but it never returns to the
shell prompt, it give me a blank line and do nothing. Please advice. The
/etc/ser/ser.cfg file is in my system already and I am able to start with
/etc/init.d/ser start. Does that means the packages is already installed?

When rpm does not give an error message and returns to the shell prompt, then the installation was succesfull.
Check if there is a /etc/ser/ser.cfg file and try to start the proxy using
/etc/init.d/ser start
as root.
