Heh.. it may be a well known network service THERE, but here in the US, there
is no *21. We activate call forwarding with a *72 -- which is why I was asking
how he wants it implemented.
In the world of telecom, there are no absolutes. :)
And yes... the way you conceptualise, this is not a trivial task. You'd need
an application that handles DTMF tones, can make changes to the SER databases,
and handle the RTP stream for purposes of playing audio and working with the
DTMF.

*21 is a well known network service in POTS. There is
a common way
how to set, active and deactivate this kind of service using an user
terminal (i.e. sip phone). On the network service part (i.e. in ser)
you would "simply" have to write a small app that handles these kind
of calls, processes what ever is needed to be done (i.e. store the
redirect number to the database) and then rewrite/reroute the call
to an annoucement server (to let the user know, if the changes took
place or not). In addition, the ser routing would need to get
extended to read a user's redirection data (on/off, where to route
to in case of on) and rewrite/reroute if needed. The same mechanism
may also be used to handle voice mail redirection.
If some is interested in implementing such kind of feature, i would
be willing to support (mainly by conceptional and testing work).

If you do a search on the list, I THINK I posted a way to do
call forwarding
(the way I was doing it anyway)... there are likely other
ways. How are you
going to take input for the forwarding, though?
Will they dial *21 and it will forward to something they've
predefined on a
website somewhere? Will they dial *21 and then the number to
which they want
to forward? How do you turn it off? Etc, etc.

Can someone point me to any resources on how to
implement services
like callforwarding by pressing *21 through the users' UA?
Basically I need my users to be able to activate different services
via the phone's keys.
thank you
