i just recently (last week) put sip firmware on a 7940G and 7960G. the are booting up with the word "SIP" at the top now. i haven't been able to get them to call each other yet. still working on that and getting my ser solaris 10 box working right. i had a few softphones calling eachother from what apeared to be via the ser box and also from what appeared to be direct ip to ip between the softphones, but i'm still unsure that the ser box was installed properly....and i'm frustrated because serweb wouldn't install properly .... that xxxphp file seemed to not want to be recognized as a package when i did pkgadd.....anyway, thanks for letting my cry on your shoulder....i;m sure it has everything to do with my lack of knowledge.....but we learn as we go don't we :)
oh, cisco phone, ummm, yeah i put the 5 files in a tftp server i think it was ...
OS79XX P003-08-2-00.bin P003-08-2-00.sbn P003-08-2-00.loads P003-08-2-00.sb2
and it loaded up a new universal application loader into the phones....."...2000-2006"
then they loaded their sip firmware ....blinky lights during upgrade.....now they boot up and go through a decision tree to find a valid config file which i haven't been able to figure out yet......

Hi,
I am looking for experiences with cisco (series 79xx) phones with sip ... can it be installed (sip) on all of them? or just a few models (7960 ... or 7970)?
Tks!

which is definitely not correct:
- if you're running version 7 or higher there is no need for the OS79XX.TXT file
- the .bin and .sbn are the unsigned and signed images containing the universal application loader.
- the .loads and .sb2 files must be coded P0S3... and not P003.
I know, it is confusing, but that is the way it is.

so, the list of 79xx phones which can be upgraded to sip is correct?

Hi,
Directly from Cisco or not, I'm also (ssshhttt) a SER user...:-)
The list is correct with respect to SIP, but it depends on the call agent.
7905, 7912, 7940 and 7960 have a SIP firmware that can be installed and used independently from any other gear/software. Well, you need at least a TFTP server and possibly a SIP proxy/registrar/gateway to talk to.
The others can run SIP when under control of CCM5.0. There is no "independent" SIP firmware for the 7941,7961,7970,7971. Yet.
cheers, Jan

Hi Jan,
I am just curious -- what does it mean exactly it speaks SIP only under CCM5.0?
Thanks!

Hello Jiri,
Most probably my expression 'under control' is too harsh. It means that the SIP firmware of those phones is made so that you can manage those phones from CCM 5.0 as you would do with SCCP phones with Call Manager 4.x and earlier: upgrade/downgrade, enabling/disabling of features, download of softkeys, dialplan files.
Today there is not yet a SIP firmware for the 79[11|41|61|70|71] phones that allows you to use them as the 79[05|12|40|60] today , i.e. independently from any brand of SIP proxy, registrar or redirect server. It is also possible to use non-Cisco SIP phones with CCM5.0
kind regards, Jan

I had difficulties to find proper instructions from cisco website how to upgrade Cisco 7960 to SIP So if anyone interested this link http://www.voip-info.org/wiki/view/Firmware+issues+on+7940+-+7960 helped me to do it. Ladislav
