Im not sure, but I think you dont have the mysql-client stuff installed.. had a simluar problem a couple of weeks ago. So, install mysql-client.. etc. .and try again

rpm -qa | grep MySQL-* MySQL-client .... etc ...

Same as I had on the server, Ran Redhat .. had to download the tarball, install it .. update /etc/ld.conf .. to get it to work.

I had the same problem on a SuSE 9.0. Resolved with the addition of the development files (.h, etc). In SuSE's case is mysql-devel package. That's why it worked for Atle. Installing from the tar ball he included all the necessary header and include files (development environment).
