HI, I'm using Debian Linux(while I have no idea how to check its version), and running SER on my PC. I installed MySQL 4.1.14 and SER 0.9.4, chmoded the /tmp directory to 777, and the MySQL server runs well. Maybe your mysql server is listening on TCP socket only. You can try to changee the database URL in ser:
