That's a great question Steve. This has been asked before. Perhaps this posting will help convey our reasons for doing what we've done.

The question is "why is it required to register just to read the documentation?" . I think everybody got the point about write or moderator permissions, but why for reading?
Your comparison with php.net is good, but there is no registration required for reading ... and I think that approach is better.

I agree. But that said, our documentation is still 100% beta drafts. We believe they are correct, but until the user community and/or core team gives feedback and blesses our work and correct and proper, we prefer to retain a little control.
We fully intend to give anonymous read access once everything is finished.

I just want to add an example: In the NAT config files we recently released, we discovered a serious error. After it was corrected we were able to send an email to all registered users with access to the document and the config files to notify them about the error. Several users sent us replies with a thank you, as they had just been struggling with the error.
Of course, we don't want these things to happen, but SER is very complex and I don't believe it's possible to undertake a project like this Getting Started document with config files without glitches. Sorry that you find it annoying, but that's the way it gonna be until it's proven ;-)

So if I subscribe I will get another source of spam?!?! ;-) As I said, just for reading I do not find a good reason to require registration (my opinion), a mailing list where to subscribe if you want to be noticed when something has been added/changed is a viable alternative instead of spaming all subscribers.
Besides that, having a bigger community reading the documents, the bugs will be hunted quicker. If someone feels like having something to post, then he will subscribe and send the contribution.

Daniel, I think you are knocking down open doors here. ;-) We fully agree with you, except that while we have a beta document we feel a safety in being able to contact EVERYBODY. We feel a moral responsibility here not to make problems for people... (And BTW, that moral responsibility also includes not using the mailing list outside ONsip.org purposes) As for a mailing list, we will NOT confuse people and create another mailing list, serusers is the SER community mailing list. :-) But we hope the document will be of such value to subscribers of serusers that it is a natural place for announcements. g-)
