Hello everybody,
some people expressed inconveniences regarding the new name, so we would like to get your opinion about, therefore this is a poll that will get us to a decision. Here is the question:
Do you like the name "Kamailio"? 1) Yes, I love it. Please keep it. 2) It is OK. 3) I do not mind the name at all 4) I do not like it 5) I hate the name and we should change it
There is no need of explanations, as it is up to personal taste and decision. Just vote by option.
Cheers, Daniel
PS. for those interested...
As short history about renaming story. On the 28th of March the board was informed about issues with SER part of project name. You can easily find who has the trademarks. On the 7th of April the board was informed about an agreement for the deadline as of September 30, 2008 to use old name. From there on, all old releases, documents, etc. can be referred by the old name, but nothing new. Other few discussions about what should/could be kept/changed followed and on 12th of May started the discussion about the new name with two main direction, something similar, to remind about old project or just something completely new, to be used as brand name. Couple of proposals and discussions regarding possible names followed up to 16th of July when was the deadline and the start of vote. Majority was reached on 17th but it was required to have opinions from all members of the board, last came from Bogdan, on the 28th of July.
All discussions about migration were on the board mailing list. No change were done to openser.org configuration, just the new domain with kamailio in it was pointed to same server. Every step done was reported to board, following a schedule discussed there. Another discussion was about making the renaming and 1.4.0 release in same day. Being practically impossible to do all the work in one day, it was decided to do first the announcement about renaming. That happened on 28th when all agreed with the new name.
As you can see, there was no 5 months of renaming duration. There was no change in openser.org DNS configuration undertaken with/without the knowledge of all board members. The new name domains were reserved when majority was achieved, in any case; dns entries for new name were pointed to old server shortly after booking the domains.
I don't like the name. Not so good to pronounce :)

I don't like the name. Not so good to pronounce :)
Does this actually mean that somebody knows how it's pronounced? ;) I am quite curious about the correct pronounciation.
Do you like the name "Kamailio"?
- Yes, I love it. Please keep it.
- It is OK.
- I do not mind the name at all
- I do not like it
- I hate the name and we should change it
That 4 for me, I don't think that the new name sounds very "mature", which might hurt the image people have of this project (and unfortunately in light of the current developments I don't think this image needs more damage at the moment). But I'm not quite sure that changing the name again would be a good idea either, after 1 name change, a fork and several "heated" arguments on the mailing lists (that's the most diplomatic and understated description I've ever made) I think some stability for now would be best.
Kind regards, Ardjan Zwartjes.
5 should be something like
exsip.org
;)

I have already expressed some of my thoughts on the choice of name in times past, but at this point I'm going to go for option 3 - I don't mind it.
Not because I truly feel the name befits the project, but simply as a pragmatic recognition that considerable work has already been put into changing the name to Kamailio by Daniel-Constantin, Elena-Ramona, Juha Heinanen, Henning Westerholt, and others. It would be a shame if their valuable efforts were in vain.
What this project doesn't need is yet *another* name change; that would just seem downright capricious to outsiders not privy to the nuances.

Hi,
i also take 4. I mistyped the name several times... the old name (though not available anymore) was much better to remember and more clear what the project was about...

I'll go with 2. Hard to say that I love it ... yet. A name is something we create and fill with meaning. This one's free, available and weird enough to be remembered. It's very hard to come up with those names.

It is number 2 for me. At first I -really- didn't like it, but I think that happens most times with such a big change anyways.

As short history about renaming story. On the 28th of March the board was informed about issues with SER part of project name. You can easily find who has the trademarks. Hello,
hm, not sure, but definately 4 or 5!
Main reason: hard to guess that the name belongs to a SIP project
Secondary reason: hard to pronounce (at least here in germany)
Tertiary reason: To a german marketing ear it is not very sexy (even not a bit at all ...)
regards helmut

Yeah, strange - although lot of people say Austrians do not speak german I think it should not be that hard for germans too :-)
I would like to add another option:
6) Irrespective of personal like/dislike, recognize that spending any more time on it is not the best use of time/resources.
imho, we need to put this issue to bed and move on. its done.. the name change has happened, site/domain changed, naming policy applied (near enough completely) to the codebase. Should this poll have been done before the decision was taken? Maybe, but lets all accept, learn, and move on. Our project has already received criticism from commercial corners regarding being in flux and with an uncertain future, and the whole naming topic is also closely linked to other recent events which have had a negative impact on the larger community. What we need is proactivity and solidarity. Looking forward, not back.

Yeah, It's kind of like hearing a baby's name for the first time; you might cringe for a moment, but you get over it. At this point I think changing the name again would do more harm than good.

Yeah, even I who initially "voted" differently have to agree when faced with reason: let's move on. It was nice to ask the community thought :-)
If we could just all agree on that consensus, that would at least bind the community around "the story of the name everyone hated but now chose to like anyway !" :-)

3, but I want the bikeshed painted bright fluorescent yellow!
(Good lord, it was hard enough understanding what's going on, coming back from a two-week vacation -- I get subscription reminders from this strange kamailio.org domain I hadn't heard of, and openser.org talks about opensips all of a sudden. Newcomers are going to have to deal with utter confusion. May I suggest that the website have a small FAQ or some such about the name change AND the fork, in a suitably prominent place?)
Thanks, Sajith.

some people expressed inconveniences regarding the new name, so we would like to get your opinion about, therefore this is a poll that will get us to a decision. Here is the question:
Do you like the name "Kamailio"?
- Yes, I love it. Please keep it.
- It is OK.
- I do not mind the name at all
- I do not like it
- I hate the name and we should change it
There is no need of explanations, as it is up to personal taste and decision.
